Why learn other magic as opposed to just studying exorcism?
To the experienced exorcist, this question has two immediate reactions- firstly it is a ridiculous question and we have to suppress the urge to burst out into hysterical laughter. From the other perspective, we've all been there at one point or another, that is called being a seeker and it is completely acceptable to ask silly questions at that point.
Well, why is it important? Firstly, in every magical path there are three basic things that the apprentice learns. These are centering, grounding and shielding.
Centering is essential, it is the practice of gathering all your Kia (internal energy) into one place in your body so that you can quickly move it to where it is needed. This is an especially useful technique if you're caught off guard and attacked or in an emergency situation and you can do this quickly (easier said than done).
Grounding is linking yourself to the earth, it is useful for exorcists for a myriad of reasons. Firstly and most obviously, your not going to get "soul snatched" if you're properly grounded. This is because you're "rooted", it basically acts like an anchor. Secondly, it means you can either draw energy from the earth or avoid doing so if it is badly contaminated by the possession. Finally, it means you can "plug in" to a local Ley-Line and so on and request spiritual assistance quickly- again, if it is an emergency and you have no equipment with you.

An exorcist must always be prepared to face a demonic possession/crossing with nothing but his/her bare hands- it can happen and one would be foolish not to be ready for that.
Finally, Shielding. This one is obvious but I'm a gonna go ahead and tell you anyway ^_^ . Obviously it is to shield oneself from a spell or attack. It is the equivalent to a "block" in martial arts.
Are ya convinced yet that you have to put the effort into learning other magic(s) before studying exorcism?

Some magickal practices come in useful as well. I think the two most important things to study before exorcism are Angelic Magick and Chaos Magick. Both have very opposing philosophies but both are very effective and useful for an exorcist. From summoning an Angel to creating a servitor. Additionally, it creates a very good mindset for an exorcist to use both.
This is because as an exorcist you have to walk between all spiritual paths to combat all kinds of demons and spirits etc. Sometimes these can be completely opposing theologies (Ie. Judaism and Hinduism) but in regards to the spirits- they both work. To be able to cope with this "hop" is very tricky but is a key skill for an exorcist and so by using both Angelic Magic and Chaos Magick the exorcist learns this skill early!
